Orange Road · Montclair, New Jersey

Our
Story.

The South End is not a brand new idea. It is a place with decades of real history — shaped by families, entrepreneurs, community institutions, and a shared sense of belonging along Orange Road.

"
The South End was never simply the other end of Montclair. It was a community creating its own economy, culture, and sense of belonging.

Our History

From the railroad to
Orange Road.

Late 1800s – Early 1900s
Roads, Rail & the First Businesses
The railroad and the expansion of Orange Road connected the South End to the larger Montclair community — and created the conditions for the first wave of neighborhood commerce. Small businesses, family-run shops, and service trades defined the corridor.
Mid 20th Century
Migration, Institutions & Community Life
The South End became home to a vibrant and self-sustaining community. Churches, barbershops, laundromats, neighborhood markets, and gathering places defined a world that didn't need to go elsewhere for what it needed. This was a neighborhood building its own infrastructure.
Late 20th Century
Legacy Institutions & Staying Power
When other corridors changed, many South End families and businesses stayed — invested in the neighborhood's future. The South End's institutions, from the Acme Grocery to Woods Ice Cream and the community churches, became markers of identity and continuity.
2010s – Present
New Businesses, Existing Roots
A new wave of businesses arrived along Orange Road — restaurants, health professionals, beauty businesses, creative studios — joining the long-established community institutions. The South End was not starting over. It was adding chapters.
2022 – Present
The Historic Montclair South End Business District
The formation of the Historic Montclair South End Business District gave the neighborhood a formal identity — a framework to celebrate its history, organize its businesses, and invite new energy without erasing what already existed. FAME Festival began. The Art Walk followed. And the South End started telling its own story.
Now & Next
Art · Culture · Community
The South End is deliberately weaving art, music, and cultural programming through its existing fabric of restaurants, doctors, beauty businesses, and professional services. The goal is not to transform the South End into something it's not. The goal is to make what it already is more visible — and more celebrated.
The District Today

A real neighborhood.
Real businesses.

The South End is not a gallery district. It is not an arts collective. It is a real neighborhood business corridor — where a pediatric office, a Peruvian restaurant, a dry cleaner, a fine dining room, a hair salon, and a foot doctor all coexist on the same block.

Art and culture are the thread being woven through this existing community — not the whole cloth replacing it.

Our Vision · 2035

"Montclair's South End becomes New Jersey's most soulful creative district."

Growth here does not erase memory. Success is measured in relationships as well as revenue. History remains visible. Small businesses can survive. Art lives alongside commerce. Families belong.
